Conservative discourses and LGBTI+ rights

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the presence of conservative discourse in the Catholic weekly From faith, in the context of the reform proposal to the Federal Civil Code in 2016, which intended to legalize same-sex marriage, divorce without invoking cause, homo-parental adoption, facilities for the recognition of transgender people and the change of legislation to include non-discriminatory language. Based on social imaginaries (Castoriadis, 1997), and elements of Van Dijk's (1997) critical discourse analysis, six articles published in From faith are analyzed. It is argued that the conservative discourses disseminated in the weekly influenced the discussion and rejection of the reform proposal mentioned above. Feminism in communication from Sanchez Leyva and Judith Butler's queer theory are also used.
